Should we follow the Old Testament or the New Testament? Should we follow all of it or some of it? Is the Old Testament really dead, no longer necessary for our modern age?
We can find the answers to these questions by examining scriptures from our Bibles. Let us see what the New Testament, especially the words of our Savior, has to say about the Old Testament and also what the Old Testament has to say about itself.
Our Savior says that 'Your Word' is truth. Yahshua the Messiah poured out his heart in this prayer in John 17: just before he was betrayed.
What does 'Your Word' refer to? It is the actual quotes of our Heavenly Father in the Law, Psalms and Prophets-- The Old Testament. It is the Word of Almighty Yahweh.
What is this special something by which man is to live? Please note that this verse is a direct quote from the Old Testament, in Deuteronomy 8:3. Actually, many of the scriptures which our Savior quoted in Matthew chapter 4 are taken from the book of Deuteronomy. Perhaps a description of a true worshiper can be found in these verses which are almost identical in Old and New Testaments.
Please also note that our Savior says "every word that proceeds out of the mouth of Yahweh". This shows us that we must study and accept all of the Word of Yahweh, and that we must not disregard any part of it..
How clear! Heaven and earth has not passed away as yet, therefore, not one small particle of the Old Testament can be annulled. The Law and the Prophets are the Old Testament. According to the Massoretes (the scribes), there are 66, 420 yods * in the text of the Hebrew Scriptures. The tittle is a small ornament placed on certain letters in the Hebrew text as decoration.
Not even the smallest letter in the Hebrew alphabet, or even the most minute embellishment is to be deleted from the Old Testament law until ALL of Yahweh's Words are fulfilled.
Complete fulfillment has not occurred until now, has it?
Please now turn to Isaiah 40:8 & Psalm 119:89
How long will the Word of Yahweh stand?
Forever.
Yes, when you read this from your Bible, you will most likely see the word 'forever'. This has been translated from the Hebrew word 'olahm', which, in the Strong's Concordance Lexicon #5769 is defined as concealed ie. the vanishing point; generally time out of mind (past or future) ie. (practically) eternity; always. This is an important Hebrew word to note.
The Word of Yahweh stands eternally.
Does our Heavenly Father change?
NO. He is the same yesterday, today and forever, and so is his word.
(Malachi 3:6 , Hebrews 13:8)
Does the Old Testament say that it is a criminal offense for anyone to add to or to delete from any of the Words of our Heavenly Father? Deuteronomy 4:2 and Proverbs 30:6. Is this the same injunction repeated at the end of the Book of Revelation? Revelation 22:18–19.
- We in the Assemblies of Yahweh affirm that, in order to interpret the inspired Scriptures correctly, we must use the Old Testament as a basis of our faith. We must, therefore, interpret the New Testament through the teachings of the old, recognizing complete harmony in the Word, thereby achieving sound doctrine.
